What Sand in the Bathtub or Sink Means

If you find sand in your bathtub, the problem may lie with a recirculation line. Sediment can drift into the line where it re-enters the tank and be sucked backward along it when hot water is drawn. Many tanks have a check valve to prevent this sort of thing, but most of the time, swing check valves are used. Better is a spring check-valve, which is less likely to "lime up," and stick open.
