The Future > Decarbonization

Progressive cities and states are leading a new trend: decarbonization.

Joining with people who are concerned about the effects of climate change, they are trying to ban natural gas hookups in new construction and have people rely solely on electricity.

They hope that most of the electricity will come from renewable sources such as windmills and solar panels.

Leading the charge is Berkeley, CA, which passed a ban on new gas hookups in July 2019. A few months later, the California Restaurant Association sued the city, lost, and then filed an appeal.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta, leading a coalition of eight states, New York City and the District of Columbia, filed an amicus brief with the Ninth Court of Appeal in favour of Berkeley in February 2022.
That is not the only entity promoting decarbonization. A bill has been filed in New York state to achieve similar goals, and a bill in Washington state aims to eliminate the use of fossil fuels in home heating and water heating.

What this means for water heaters is more electrics and more heat-pump water heaters.
