Musings>The Kids Can Do It Better (No You Can't)

Young people complain, "Look at the world you're leaving us; it's all messed up. We're bound to do better." Bad news, kiddies. You won't. If you troubled to read history, you'd find it's always been messed up and that right now, for all that you think it's bad, is by far as good as it's ever been. Look back a few hundred years and you'll find Protestants killing Catholics and vice versa. Nations destroying nations, Crushing poverty among the majority of people. Rampant disease.

Some things are constants. The strong trample the weak; the rich trample the poor; the clever trample the stupid.

In all of history, there have only been a handful of enlightened rulers. The Romans had three competent emperors in a row. But the norm is for rulers to party while their people suffer.

Those of you who say, "Yes, all the leaders are monsters. But I'll do different," well, you won't because the very process of rising to the top, to where you are president or king, or dictator....THAT turns you into a monster. Only monsters need apply. Nice guys finish last in that game, if they finish at all. --- Randy Schuyler
