I am a first time visitor, having scoured the internet for information about my water heater problems. I’m happy to have found this forum!

I found quite a bit of water spraying from the flue up into the draft diverter. I only see stories of water dripping down in that area. Of course, I’m hoping it’s repairable! I would appreciate your thoughts.

That’s a very bad sign. It indicates a leak under pressure. How old is this heater? Has it ever been serviced? If there is a leak inside the flue, that can’t be repaired. If it’s newer than six years, you may be able to get a warranty replacement. If it’s older than that, then expect to replace it. But do go my website, waterheaterrescue.com and read the Basics section. If you do what we advise, this will never happen again.

It’s very old – over 10 years. I’ve never really given it any thought, at all. I didn’t even realize water heaters needed maintenance, so I have a lot to catch up on.
Thank you for your response. I’ll get to reading!
