    Dear all,

The vent piping on my heater seems like it needs to be replaced. When I go to Home depot I see that the vent pipe they sell is double-walled. I assume this is safer in terms of being close to sheetrock but wonder if I should use it if my run of pipe is not close to sheetrock (which it’s not). Heavier is the big reason I can think of not to, as well as being more complicated in general. What do you think?

I’m pretty sure double-wall is required by code, not an option.

Hello: You really need to get some info on how code is interpreted locally. My HD sells single wall pipe and I use it where it’s safe. When anywhere near combustibles, double wall (with a one inch clearance) is good. I’ve heard of some inspectors saying it must all be double wall, but don’t know that’s actually written into code.

    Yours, Larry
