If you know how to use a multimeter, use the Tanklets link at the top of the page and read Electric Water Heater Issues. It contains a step by step list of things to look for and test for. If you don’t know how to use one, better get a pro to check it out. Electric water heaters are dangerous!

    Chuck,

If the WH is wired correctly then one of the elements probably has a crack in it. The thermostats only interrupt one leg so if a crack exists, a complete circuit exists through the water and the element will continue to heat until the red button (thermal) pops out.
