I have a 4 year old rheem 75gal. power vent LP water heater, the pilot wont lite & soot is present on top in the vent – exhaust area & by the bottom control box. Last Oct. I had the same problem. The plumber replaced the piloit sensor & cleaned up the soot. Now 4 1/2 month it has happened again. What would be causing this? My house is 4years old. Extremely frustrated!

Soot can be caused by gunk underneath the heater being sucked into the burner and clogging it, and anything that causes the vent not to draw properly. Make sure the floor under the heater is kept clean and that the both the burner and the flue were well-cleaned. Beyond that, consider obstructions from the vent to the roof. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the info. I had the plumber come out & they installed a new water heater and installed a inlet air duct from outside to the bottom of the heater. 😀 hopefully the prob. is solved
