A year ago we purchased a new water heater (Sears Kenmore). Ever since the hot water smells badly and tasts awful. We have city water and no softner. I thought the smell might go away.

Reading up, I guess it might be the sacrficial anode material. What is the stuff that smells? Can the bad stuff be analysed in the water? What should the water be tested for?

Before I go for exchanging the anode, I want to make sure that the anode is really the origin of the smell and taste. Could there be other origins, like solder flux or other things from manufacturing? What should I have the water tested for?

Well, I think you are the one I answered privately, but if I’d known you were going to post here, I wouldn’t have. When you say, “smells bad,” how do you mean? I said the classic bacteria smell was rotten eggs. Do you have that or something different?

I also said you should read the page on smelly water. If you haven’t yet, do that.
