I have a cabin that I leave for weeks at a time. I want to shut off my water when I leave. Should I shut off my electric hot water tank when I shut off my water? Will it freeze if it is in a closet on the north side of cabin? Won’t the water in the tank just stay warm if I leave it on with the water shut off at the meter? What should a person do with a hot water tank when leaving for a while? Thanks.

Hello: This is literally a matter of degree 🙂 It seems you need to get water out of the piping in any event, but the tank is another question. I’d be tempted to record the temps in the cabin over a cold period to see if freezing of the tank is a real risk. If it is, setting the lower thermostat to its lowest setting should do it. I worry about odor in unused/stagnant tanks, but keeping the temp low will help prevent that trouble.

    Yours, Larry
