The Tank short supply of hot water

Have a 9 yr old electric 50 gal HWH. Get about 5 minutes of semi-hot water, then goes to just warm (like the top element is working but the bottom one isn’t). Replaced the lower temp control – didn’t help. Cannot remove the lower element as the nut outside the tank is rusted. The tank has not been drained for 7+ years. Can sediment block the lower element from heating the water?

Don’t think it needs a dip tube, as I have not seen any plastic pieces in drains – plus have only 12″ of clearance to replace one.

Can it be saved or must I replace it? Suggestions?

Hello: I’d turn off the power and check the lower element using a volt-ohm meter. You’ll find that procedure described in detail in other questions. If the element is bad, you might be better off to start fresh and flush the new heater periodically to help it to perform better.

Search “testing elements” and look at the third response for the detail you are looking for.

    Yours, Larry
