I have a 2.5 year old electric hot water heater that, about 2 weeks ago, stopped heating the water. It appears as though something is triggering the reset button – when I press the reset button, the water will start to heat. However, this has now become a daily occurrance. What could be causing it?

Hello: The most likely cause is a thermostat that is stuck “on”. Two other possibilities are an element that is leaking current to ground, so never really shuts off and the high limit itself not working correctly.

I’d start by looking at thermostats for any evidence of moisture, carbon, or overheating. Remember, you’ve got 240 volts there 😯 and you need to be handy with a meter.

Do check your heater’s parts warranty. The thermostats might be covered ;).

    Yours, Larry
