Situation: One pressure regulator for a group of 4, 5, or 6 one-bedroom cottages. Each cottage has its own 29 gallon gas water heater. In San Diego, California.

Question: Must each water heater get its own expansion tank, or can one expansion tank on the main line handle multiple water heaters?

Is this a code violation? Or a good practices violation?

    Thank you.

Hello, Here is a sizing program that should fit your needs: http://www.amtrol.com/support/therm_com_sizing.html It seems to me that the total volume of the system could be served by one expansion tank, but the one caveat is whether or not this could create an unsafe system somehow and that likely has to do with how valves might be used. As to what is code, your local inspector can interpret it however he/she decides, but the physics tells me that a single tank can work. 😉
