noticed i had no hot water , so went to check the hot water heater, pilot was not lit, shut off gas for a while, tried to relight but wouldn’t, i noticed water underneath the tank. what would cause this, how would i be able to tell if i have a leak and would this cause the pilot not to light?

How old is your water heater and what brand is it?

I suggest you to to Tanklets (link at the top of the Tank page) and read the one about FVIR issues. I think it’s that. But it will be important to know the brand because there are two FVIR systems. I have a feeling it’s the one that’s affected by dirt buildup.

It could also be a bad thermocouple. That’s more common on older water heaters.
