Gravity film heat exchangers are designed to be installed vertically. But many ranch style homes with tight crawl spaces don’t have the space for vertical orientation. How much heat is recovered if the GFX is horizontal?

Hello: First I’d try http://gfxtechnology.com/ to see if they can give you an answer. My suspicion is that as the contact area of water in a horizontal line is much less than what you get with the water sheeting down the insides of the pipe, the heat recovered might be as high as 1/4 as much. GFX has suggested in the past, using a pump to move water through their heat exchangers when there isn’t room for gravity flow. I prefer gravity as it can’t break 😀
