Hi, I have a standard gas fired direct vent hot water heater. I recently had whining/knocking noises from different parts of the house. Plumber came and replaced the pressure valve. Still noise. During second visit plumber realizes noise is due to expansion tank. I am not sure if he drained it or adjusted the pressure or what he did. The fix worked for a couple of months. Now the noise is coming back. I am reluctant to call the same plumber back, and am wondering if this is something I can fix myself. (I am VERY handy.) Thank you for any input.

Hello: Get a pressure gauge and hook it up to the heater drain or to a bibb outside, but downstream of the pressure reducer. let us know what sort of readings you get, especially when the heater is working.

Get a lazy pointer gauge, that way you can leave it on for a while and can find out what was the max pressure reached.
