Our 11 year old Bradford White Electric water heater is making clanking/knocking noises, the cold intake pipe is very hot, and we have air in all our water pipes inside and out — is the air caused from the water heater? If so, is it our best bet to just replace it?

Hello: Turn power off to the heater and see if the “air” problems go away. It could be steam that’s being caused by a thermostat not shutting off the heater’s element when the water is hot enough 😯

And if it is steam you’ll want to check your safety release valve to see why it is not opening.
