Hello: Even if you could get the existing drain valve to work for a bit, it can easily clog up again later as sediment can’t pass through it readily. Taking the valve out is really the only good fix. Metal valves can be tough, but plastic ones unscrew or break off. Either is not too hard to deal with as long as you don’t have water pressure in the tank and you keep air from getting into the tank 😉
