In my first house when I was single, I had a 40 gallon electric WH. I disconnected the lower thermostat. About 30 minutes before getting a shower I would turn the breaker on. Then turn the breaker off before the shower. I also installed a 5/32 inch orifice before the shower head. I had enough hot water for a shower. When the water started to cool I was through. WH was now cold. No standby losses. In the summer time I may have even picked up a few BTUs from the garage. All this changed when I got married!
