Hello: It sounds like there is a bit of current in the softener lines and the softener prevents current flow across it. Polarity doesn’t matter when measuring alternating current (AC). Regarding that #6 copper bonding wire that runs to the main panel… just jumper across the softener and connect it directly or through copper pipe to that #6 wire. That way ALL induced or leaked current will have an easy path to ground.
That still doesn’t answer just why the current shows up as it does, but as long as the problem is managed and cannot possibly cause damage, some mystery is not necessarily a bad thing. 😉
