I rewired my 1991 60 gallon Rheem water heater to 120 volts in September 2010. Originally, top and bottom elements were 3,000 watts. In March, 2011 replaced the bottom with a 240/1500 watt element. This is for non-simultaneous operation. So, the top is effectively 750 watt and the bottom is 375 watt. On a simple leviton electronic timer to take advantage of TOU rates. On from 7 pm to 7 am. Works very well. Rarely does the top element energize. Couldn’t/wouldn’t have done it without the help at waterheatertimer.org. Works well for a family of two.
