Today the convention with water heaters is that cold is on the right and hot on the left, just like faucets. In the old days, (1920s-1930s) The convention for water heaters was different in the Eastern than in the Western US. No doubt you’ve run across faucets plumbed backwards :X The convention is useful, but there is no law against breaking it. It is polite to leave a hint though 😎
