The heater has a date of 2002 by A.O. Smith model # FSG 100 250
Serial # MG02-1816568-250. It has a roughly 5″ vent pipe that connects to the chimney and it also ‘T’s with the vent from the adjacent boiler.
The technician told me that the popping sound I hear is from the sediment heating up… so I assume that the unit would need flushing and cleaning out?
I also need a new recirculating pump which would be part of the work. This is my first time dealing with this, so I’m learning as I go. We did have to replace an electric water heater in 2015 at our lake house and we installed a Whirlpool (mfg. by HTP) which is stainless, but I don’t know whether the anodes are aluminum or magnesium.
Consumer reports stress the warranty as a significant factor when choosing a new heater. Many have 12 yr. but the B&W models proposed by my plumber only offer a 6 yr.
Many thanks for your help and guidance!
