Hello: Sadly, that would do you no good at all. The anode needs to be electrically connected to the tank to work. I think I’d remove and later reinstall the ductwork, so you can install either a magnesium or a powered anode. If installing a mag anode, make the ductwork easy to move in future also. Whoever installed it like this to begin with should be embarrassed. 😛
ps. It would be nice if we could see a photo of the setup. Perhaps we can come up with ideas for making it better.
