Hello: You can drain it, but it’s unlikely it can really be made bone dry. So, there will likely be some rusting going on as there will be nothing to stop it. Any tank left sitting for long periods invites odor. There is a good chance the powered anode will fix it, but it is a gamble.

After this tank heats its last gallon, you might do well to get a Marathon heater or something that doesn’t need an anode. If the cabin gets cold, the new heater must be freeze resistant.
