Hello: I’m going to have to look into the Bradford White heater to see what’s special there. First hour rating, for those new to the term just means the number of gallons a heater can deliver in the first hour, from a hot start. So, this begins with most of the volume of the tank along with however many gallons the unit can heat in one hour. A fifty gallon heater would deliver about forty gallons in the first hour even if it was shut off.

A variable manufacturers play with is the temperature rise. It used to be standard that 90 degrees F was the agreed on temp rise. Now you need to pay attention as some think 40 degrees is good. It makes it look like they deliver twice as much 😛

So, to the volume, add recovery rate for one hour. See if this adds up to the stated first hour rating. If it’s less, than it’s time to go looking for the magic in the design 😎

Yours, Larry
