You can try removing the anode, rewrapping it with Teflon, about six wraps, and reinstalling it; possibly the same with the hot and cold fittings. But it sounds ominous. It may be that you waited too long to replace the anode. Don’t even think about removing the top. The foam insulation under it is like glue and you’ll find you’ve gotten into a nightmare.
