Heat-pump water heaters may be the wave of the future, as many say, but André Laperrière, of Hydro Quebec, gave a presentation to show that one size does not fit all. One problem with heat-pump heaters is if they are in a place where it's too cold to find any heat to pump. Or if they are in heated space in a cold clime where they they are essentially robbing the surroundings to heat the water. His utility hit on a different solution, involving electric water heaters with three elements instead of the more typical two. His presentation is on the ACEEE website.
