A pretty clean combustion chamber of a gas water heater

The combustion chamber on a gas water heater is where the burner is, beneath the tank of water, at the bottom of the water heater. The one on the right is from my own now-35-year-old heater. The roof looks very good, with no rust or marks of running water, and no sign of debris on the burner (foreground)

The one below it is markedly different, not the worst that I've seen by a long shot, but showing a lot of rust and debris that has chipped off the walls of the flue and fallen onto the burner. It started leaking shortly after this picture was taken.
